We Have A Cover!

Because I don't know how to attach a PDF (or what a PDF is for that matter) to my blog, I printed the cover on my dandy printer and attached it with needles (I couldn't find any pins) to my green chair and took photographs of it.

I know how to attach photographs, with and without needles.

The odds are when the book is published, the cover may look a little, oh I don't know, slicker, but in the meantime, I'm thrilled and can't wait to show it off.

So here's the cover for This World We Live In (by New York Times Best Selling Author of Life As We Knew It-Moi)!

For future reference - I THINK you can 'save as' on a PDF and change the file type to JPG, thus making it a picture that you can post. I know you can do that if you have the full version of Adobe Acrobat; I'm not sure if that's an option if you just have the Adobe Reader. I don't know if this comment is helpful at all. :)

But the cover looks great! Very exciting!

Thank you Kristi Nommensen Dorson-

I have no idea how to do any of the things you just suggested. I couldn't even save the PDF as a document; all I got was words (not that there's anything wrong with the words, but covers are kind of visual).

I'll answer your questions about agents either later today or tomorrow. Right now I'm feeling a little too frazzled to go into agent details!

Oh man, I'm so looking forward to this! Sorry I haven't said anything for a while. I follow your blog, though, and am definitely looking forward to the next installment in the series/world. And you can expect yet another review from me when it comes out :P. And another interview, of course.

*screams with joy*

LOVE the cover! I can't wait to read it! Thanks so much again for sending me the autograph sticker for d&g! I was so excited about that, LOL...

Hi to Becky and Nora and Susan and S.M.D.-

I love the cover. I love how they captured the grayness of it all, and the desolation of the house, but with light shining through.

My agent loves it also.

Harcourt has done a really great job with all three covers.

Susan Beth Pfeffer said...

Thank you Karen Strong-

You slipped in there while I was commenting. Very sneaky of you!

It looks gorgeous, Susan. (Not that the other covers have been shabby.) {}

This one has an other-worldly appearance, grounded by the reality of the home with the faint glow on earth.

Love it.

The grey-on-black earth reminds me of the old intro to the daytime CBS show, AS THE WORLD TURNS. ;}

When do we get to read THIS book?

Oooooh that looks fabulous! I keep checking the database at work (B&N) for a cover, forgetting I have a better chance of getting one here through you. Thanks for sharing! It looks great and I can't WAIT to read it.

That cover is going to draw those teens in again. Can't wait to read this book. I booktalked it during my summer reading visits, just to get the kids hyped up.

Hi Writerross and Sarah and Ann Marie-

Thank you for your comments and your enthusiasm.

I emailed Harcourt to confirm the April 1 publication date, and then I scurried over to Amazon and discovered they indeed had it on April 1.

Which is a mere 8 1/2 months from now.

Or: Summer, Labor Day, the start of the school year, the high holy days, the World Series Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, the Superbowl, my birthday, the Winter Olympics, and the never ending month of March from now!

Wait a second there, Pfeffer, how come it doesn't say New York Times Best Selling Author?

Glen

Susan Beth Pfeffer said...

Hi Glen-

It does say New York Times Best Selling Author. That's what many of the letters under my name say.

It's just between making a copy on my printer and holding it up with needles on my chair and then photographing same, a certain amount of detail is lost.

But it really truly does say it!

Okay, then; that's different.

Glen

By the way, cover looks great, but it reminds me of LAWKI a lot.

Wendy said...

I think it makes sense that it echoes LAWKI. It's a follow-up story with a certain grayness rather than the blue and white of LAWKI, suggesting that the world has passed into a dull gray.

Susan Beth Pfeffer said...

Hello again Glen and hi Wendy-

Yes, I think the cover is meant to echo that of LAWKI, although it has elements of the dead & the gone as well (the greenish tint and the lower case title, which kind of took me by surprise).

I think the three covers together will look spectacular, and I look forward to lining them up and admiring them, when I have an actual TW cover to play with!

I love that you found a creative way to share your cover with us! I loved the first two in this "series" and look forward to a new book by you! I still rave about Life as We Knew It. It unnerved me enough that I planted my own raised beds and have my first crop of blueberries and strawberries--now that's a good book!

I LOVE IT SUSAN

Happy Friday, bestbookihavenotread and jmaster1324-

I love the cover too. So gray. So bleak.

As it happens, I have never been described as oblique. Not even as oh so bleak. We'll leave gray out of the discussion.

When I was writing LAWKI, I told myself if people ever read it, it would affect them in ways I would never know about. I thought someone might take up meteorology as a hobby, or name their daughter Miranda.

But to learn my book inspired someone to plant strawberries and blueberries! Now that's an unexpected delight (notice how unoblique I am about all this!).

Beautiful artwork. Who's the artist? Any hints on the dedication?

I LOVE your books and writing SO much! I can't wait for This World We Live In to come out! How do you think of the outstanding stories? You are truely amazing!

-Meagan

Susan Beth Pfeffer said...

Hi Anonymous and Anonymous Meagan-

I don't know who designed the cover. Kelly Eismann designed the covers for LAWKI and d&g (I know this because I just now pulled both books off the bookshelf and looked).

As far as the dedication goes, it's interesting that you should ask. Usually I put the dedication page in at the very last minute, after the editor prods me about it. But for TW, I knew all along who the book was going to be dedicated to, and pretty much how I wanted the dedication worded. It's dedicated to a whole lot of people, and I hope they'll appreciate it.

I love coming up with stories, Meagan; it's my favorite part of writing. The trick really isn't coming up with the idea (there are ideas all over the place). It's sticking with the idea once you get it, and developing it until it's a full fledged book. Then, of course, you have to write it, and that's when fun turns into work!

You must look at the current cover of the National Space Society Magazine 'Ad Astra'. An illustration of the earth that reminds me of your moons. And a caption that convinces me they should know about your books. It reads, "An artist's rendering of an asteroid moments before an imminent impact with Earth. The question of such an impact is not if but when." Okay. So it's an asteroid...I don't know about you, but I think they should know about your books. http://www.nss.org/adastra/volume20/v20n4.html

hey susan, there are no pictures of you or you books on photobucket. now that makes no sents. you are the best book writer i have known of.

Caroline said...

Oh wow! The cover is amazing! I can't wait until it is released!

Susan Beth Pfeffer said...

Hello to W. Slezak-

It is my sincerest hope that I won't be around when an asteroid hits this planet. Not even an itty bitty asteroid. Those suckers are nasty.

It's a lot of fun to think about how people would survive under worst case scenarios, but I find surviving Scooter's attacks on my toes to be sufficient.

I know my limitations!

Susan Beth Pfeffer said...

Hi again jmaster1324-

I went over to Photobucket and typed in Pfeffer to see what I could find.

There was one LAWKI cover, but that was pretty much it. I didn't see my grandfather or my father or my brother or my cousins Pfeffer or any of their descendents.

I did see a lot of pepper shakers, and two baseball players (I'd only known about one). And a Pfeffer Beach and a Pfeffer Point, both of which I must located and go to at some point (what a place for a family reunion).

So you're right. I am seriously unrepresented at Photo Bucket, but I must say I had a good time looking at the various Pfeffer items.

Now I must google Pfeffer Beach and Pfeffer Point!

Susan Beth Pfeffer said...

Hello Caroline-

I agree completely. I think they've done a great job with the cover, and I'm madly impatient for the book to come out (even though I know each and every plot twist by heart!).

Pretty!
Will there be a chance to get a advanced copy??

Susan Beth Pfeffer said...

Hi and thank you to readerchick12-

I don't know what the advance copy situation will be. Harcourt was very generous giving me ARCs for d&g, and I distributed as many of them as I could to people who read my blog.

But I have a new editor now, and she's away on vacation. When I find out if I'll have copies to distribute, I'll certainly let people here know.

Hi Kenzie-

The book has an April 1, 2010 publication date, but a lot of times the book is actually available a few weeks before then.

So think early spring!
