Come Meet The Life As We Knew It Website!

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has created a website for Life As We Knew It, The Dead And The Gone, and This World We Live In. It has links to reviews, to the video trailer, to this very blog (Hi Me!), and to discussion guides for all three books.

I was about to write that I thought it is possibly the most beautiful thing ever, but Scooter just meowed a protest. What a psychic (as well as psycho) cat he is.

All right. The website is the second most beautiful thing ever, and certainly the most beautiful thing that doesn't have four legs and a propensity for playing Purr On The Neck at 5 in the morning.

Which makes it very darn beautiful indeed!

The website is amazing! Congrats with that =) you deserve it!

I'm glad you have a website :) You're talented and I LOVE LOVE LOVE "Life As We Knew It." My only problem with any of it is that the two Christians in the book are totally crazy and selfish in their own way. I'm no Megan, and my pastor is certainly no Rev Marshal. Why'd you make the only Christians so crazy?

Anonymous said...

Yeah I agree with 3 anonymous's comment. LAWKI had a lot of crazy Christians. I'm Catholic and I'm not the least bit crazy. Bri was borderline crazy Christian. Moving on. The new site is veru very cool!

Wonderful start to your June with HMH launching this gorgeous site - and the trailer is terrific! (I'll bet even Scooter enjoyed watching it.)

Congrats, Elaine

Hi Jade and Anonymous and Anonymous and Sunshine and Elaine Marie Alphin-

It's been a busy few days and I'm overdue in saying hello.

I have no defense in why I portrayed some characters the way I did. They worked for the story I wanted to tell. Some people hate Mom because she doesn't give blankets to people. Some people hate Miranda because they think she whines too much.

For all I know, there are heartless people out there who hate Horton.

I'm in too good a mood to hate anyone, now that I've been to one and a quarter Adam Lambert concerts and have my shiny new enormous TV and lovely website and Scooter let me sleep until 6:45 AM!

Sue! Sue! You almost had one less fan. Today I almost died! I told you how I was graduating my school already. Right? Well went to an amusement park. I love the nice rides like the tilt-a-whirl, tea cups, scrambler, mirror maze, and much more. I hate rollar coasters and any death defying rides. Well my BFF said to me, "Come on X-Treme Frisbee with me. It's a baby ride. I was stupid enough to believe her. Well, the name should have prepared me for what I was going to do. I was strapped to the side of this death circle and that spun. If that was bad, a giant claw started swaying the death circle. It went higher and higher until I was like 150 feet in the air. This whole time it was spinning! On the ride I was hyperventillating, shaking, and holding on tightly for sweet sweet life. My BFF asked me on the ride every so casually, "Are you okay?" I shouted, "NO!" "Are you having fun?" "NO!!!" That ride lasted for two whole minutes! I was terrified! I nearly died! Oh it was awful! When the ride was finally over I was shaking,and I couldn't walk a straight line. I ran to the exit and examined myself to see if I was still alive. Oh, that was NOT fun at all!

~~~ Sunshine :-) [Well in this case a :-( would be rather good)
You know you've won over your readers when they feel strongly enough about your characters to hate them!
Is there going to be a 4th book in the series or was that it?
I have a question is their a paragraph that shows foreshadowing if their is can you write it please.
I watched the trailer and really liked it and got to thinking, if you made a movie out of the books it would be the new twilight! :)
I read all three of the books and loved them all. I was staing on a small island called Cuttyhunk and it was the end of the summer. People were leaving and the island was becoming very desolate. There are no grocery stores on the island so if you stay longer than you expected you have to ration your food. Not quite as drastic as in your stories but enough that I could feel closer and relate to your characters. I loved how resourceful they would be. I really would like you to write a fourth book to capture the hope that they had to continue on. Thanks for great reading and helping us to feel the characters.
Susan, I loved your books.
I've never had a book make me cry like a baby.. And The Dead and The Gone did that.
Now, I just finished the last one, This World We Live In, and I loved it even more.
But, I was just wondering if you were going to continue on?
I'd really like to know Alex's response for when he finds out what Miranda did, even though it was for the best.
And I just loved their relationship, and how he and Julie, and Bri for that matter, kept their faith through all of this.
There was not a character I can say I truly hated.. I didn't like Syl because she let Horton out and he died because of it. :(
And she never explained her reasoning behind letting him out.. Haha.
But really, I think if you kept going, I know she said she was done writing and junk, but maybe you could go back to Alex and have him write again. Or have them have a kid and have them do the writing, lol.
Sorry, I just really liked the series and your writing, and I do hope you will continue.
Thanks!
-Dana
I have just finished the "life as we knew it series. like 5 minutes ago. I nearly cried in the end but that's not why I'm writing this i think there should be a fourth book in Alex's point of view cause to me i think its keeping the reader wondering what will happen in this new world of there's so if you have time can you lease write another book. hmm... i do like writing books.... hmmm MAYBE I SHOULD WRITE IT!! :)
Oh my gosh....I LOVE these books! Even though I've only read one "Life As We Knew It," I still think that the next two are going to be amazing! I mean Miranda has like no more friends and can barely communicate with her Dad and Lisa. And she has no idea if she has a stepsister or stepbrother, or if they are even alive... and how Dan had to leave...well its just an amazing book and I'm going to read the rest within four months!!
I just wanted to tell you how much of an impression your series (Life as we knew it), has made on me. I stayed up late night after night reading the books. I really felt for the characters and my feelings for Miranda at the end of the last book vacillated between understanding and anger. Because of these books I had an overwhelming urge, for weeks, to stockpile canned food, toilet paper and batteries. Thank you for such an original story.
So on Monday of this week I had asked my high school librarian that I really needed a new book to read since I had run out of new books. (This was really hard for her because I've read so many books from our library, haha.) But she managed to find LAWKI and TDAG for me to read. I was a little skeptical but took to reading it since I give books a fair chance first. I got hooked from the first book and brought the last book today- read it in under two hours. From the beginning I've had the urge to start collecting a bunch of food should we have a post-apocalyptic event..
Your last book made me a little upset though because I really wanted to know more!! Did Miranda and Alex finally get married? Did they reach their safe town? Did the bad moon finally go away.. :<
Yeah, I know, Miranda's not writing anymore but still.. Alex's point of view maybe?
Anyways, I loved your books! When I get the money, I'm buying the first two to add to my collection with the third! Thanks for writing!
I really love your books! I had just finished "this world we live in" and I finished "the dead & the gone" the day before! I was very sad when I ended up finishing the last one! I didn't want it to end! I really hope you decide to make a 4th somehow. Maybe do it with Alex point of view. But they all were very amazing! :)
Greetings!
I just finished reading the second book in your "Life as We Knew It" series and I am so hooked! As a high school English teacher I am always on the lookout for young adult fiction that will interest my students. I can hardly wait to get book circle sets of all of this series for my students to read next year. The characters and events are so believable and easily to identify with their internal and external conflicts. Wonderful writing!
The Life as we knew It books to me are like the Harry Potter books to others. I am a dystopia book freak ever since my school librarian gave me the book from the Newbery Candidate list. I voted for the book.Ever since I have been searching for other books like this series and have failed.Thanks for writing such awesome books.:)
Hi I loooove this series and I have 2 questions:
1. Is there going to be any other books in the series? You left this world we live in wide open for another one!
2. Is there ever going to be a movie for this series? That would be awesome!!! I would want to play Julie!!! She reminds me of me!! :D
I must tell you that I was looking for a new series to start earlier this week. I found Life as We Knew it on Tuesday at 3:00 in the afternoon. I started reading it at 4:00 and I completed it at 1:00 am. It was a absolutely fantastic book. I am now deep into The Dead and The Gone and I just can't wait to see how everything turns out. Thank you for these wonderful additions to my ever growing book shelf.
This book is heavy handed in political and religious topics in a negative way. That kills a good story to me and fiction should be a place to escape the controversy of world topics. If I wanted an authors opinion on political or religious matters I would get a non fiction read. No wonder she targets the teen readers. Parents read what your children read before they read it.
I absolutely loved this series and Tegan and Desiree i know how you feel from the first book i had the urge to collect canned goods and batteries and everything we might need to survive a post-apocalyptic event. I'm only 12 and i have read this series in three days it is amazing. i could not stop reading them. i found out about them from my librarian at school because i have read just about every book in the library so i asked for recommendation on any good books and she suggested this series. I'm so thankful she told me about them.every time i picked up one of the books i felt like i was actually there and when i put it down i realize the moon hasn't gotten any closer, thankfully, and then i go and check my pantry (weird but true)i hope you love this series as much as i did :)
Your books are awesome times ten. They really put life into pespective. One question though, what happens to Miranda and Alex? O.k maybe two questions, what about Mirandas brothers, julie, and Mirandas parents and sister in law? Can you please please write another book???
Anonymous said...
Okay, I've read the third book first, but I still understood the plot. I am so curious about the end when (SPOILER ALERT) they left from their home. Please write another book, it just seems like there is more to it. Thank you, you rock Susan Beth Pfeffer!!!
(In a chanting style...)
MORE BOOKS!
MOVIES!
MORE BOOKS!
OR A MINISERIES!
MORE BOOKS!
PRETTY PLEASE!
I love this series. I read it probably 2 years ago. I think I had to wait a bit for the 3rd book. It's not often you find a really good series that agrees so much with your taste that you just don't want it to end. So please forgive my selfishness and chanting. You are a very talented writer Susan. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world.
For the past two years we have used your Last Survivors series as the cornerstone for our summer reading programs at the 6th, 7th and 8th grades at the Academy of Aerospace and Engineering in Bloomfield CT.
Because we believe that the arts inform our ability to communicate and encourage elegant design, students are encouraged to use their imagination in creating project that address the characters and their Technological dilemmas. These projects can take any number of forms from a computerized presentation, to a cd cover to a clay diorama or working prototype of an invention.
Your writing has inspired some truly exciting student creativity. We look forward to the opportunity to share what your inspiration has inspired in our students.
Please make a 5 book, I had to read Life as we knew it for a class and I loved it I couldn't stop reading until I finished the 4 book. I read them all in 5 days. I hope you make some more because they are just amazing!! Love Um!!
The first book I read of yours was The Year Without Michael and I read it over and over again. What a sad yet wonderful story. I fell in love with Life as We Knew It after I read it the first time and then I bought the book on CD and listened to it several times too. The raw and imaginative fear and hardship of a life during such a horrible event had me hooked from the first chapter. I have read other books in the series and all are equally as good. I hope we can read more of Miranda and her journey through this world she lives in.
I thought this was a great book. Now that I have read the whole series, I spend my time looking for more like this. I found Theresa Shaver's "Stranded" series, "Land" "Sea" and "Home", also very good YA reading.
Ashton said...
Hey Susan I have just finished reading your fantastic book serious for life as we knew it,
I found the ending quite abrupt and. I would just like to ask you to consider making a fifth book about new harmony and how Miranda’s baby grows up and just have another book to read as I couldn’t put these books down I read every night till they were finished until I fell asleep!!!!!! And it would be good to see Jon marry Sarah and they have there on child. In the shade of the moon I loves the book but my favourite book was life as we knew it but in the shade of the moon sly and Matt weren’t in the story as much as I noticed and it was really just Jon Lisa a nd gabe. So if you do read this please reply :) and I hope you can take my feedback and make a fifth book !!!
I just wanna know if it's possible to get a 5th book in the last survivors series. It's so good! A 5th book would be just amazing to see. Maybe about the sexton clavers finding out what really happen somehow and hunting them down and them being on the run? Anyways, love the series.
