Rice And Famous

The Bolivian Hat is back in business.

I received an e-mail from my wonderful editor's wonderful assistant saying they'd be sending me some more ARCs of the dead & the gone. That's my wonderful editor, on the left, holding copies of my books. Her wonderful assistant is the one wearing boxing gloves. You can see from their high heel shoes how worldly and sophisticated they are.

If there's anyone out there who's interested in an ARC of d&g and hasn't yet requested one, send me an e-mail via the darling link on the left. I'll put your e-mail address in the plastic sandwich bag holding station until such time as the ARCs arrive, at which point, into the Bolivian hat they'll go, along, of course, with all the previously received ones.

Speaking of Harcourt, they were kind enough to send me detailed instructions on how to brag until my New Year's resolution to be modest takes control. They specifically said I should write a Wikipedia article about myself, since no one else was ever going to do it for me. So I'll be spending the weekend researching my life and career. What a shame Wikipedia doesn't use photographs.

While I'm still free to brag, let me show you this 2008 book discussion listing for a library in upstate New York.

January 23
The Falls, Joyce Carol Oates
February 27
Beloved, Toni Morrison
March 26
Life of Pi, Yann Martel
April 23
Digging to America, Anne Tyler
May 28
Life As We Knew It, Susan Beth Pfeffer
June 25
The Bear, William Faulkner
July 23
Assassination Vacation, Sarah Vowell
August 27
Water for Elephants, Sara Gruen
September 24
A Thousand Splendid Suns, Khaled Hosseini
October 29
The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde
November 19
To Be Decided in 2008

I sent this list to my brother, pointing out that two of the people on it had won Nobel Prizes for literature, and thus the odds on my winning one had increased. "Not by much," was his reasoned response.

Also, as a result of my near casual googling, I found the following rice game. Since I'm very sensitive about my failure to include rice during the Crazy Shopping Day section of LAWKI, I'm posting this link as a form of compensation: http://www.freerice.com/

If nothing else, by posting that link, I've increased the odds on my winning a Nobel Peace Prize.

I promise, when that happens, to be very modest about it!

I have my fingers crossed! Reading the Yankee Stadium scene just make the whole wait longer. I try to teach my children patience, but I'm not having much luck with it myself.

Susan, if you don't win a Nobel Prize, life will go on (no pun intended).

However...if d&g doesn't win the award the LAWKI missed out on (the one in October, the best YA something or other, dangit, I can't remember it), I will get very, very angry.

Let's face it: d&g racheted (sp) up the tension and the intensity and the entire nature of the situation that much more. Whoever gets your ARC's this time will be very lucky.

BTW, Kylen here.

I am a lucky possessor of a galley of d&G. Living in NYC, it really hits home to me how isolated we can be. I don't want to say too much, just that I thought this was even finer than LIWKI.

Hi! Once I was going to write a wikipedia article on you but then I changed my mind... o_o haha. So you almost got your own article!

& one of those people in the first drawing at first looked like a guy so I laughed out loud when I saw his (okay her) red shoes. HAHA.

Hi to paige v. and anonymous Kylen and anonymous Glen and just plain anonymous (such a popular name) and Caroline-

Thanks for all the kind words about the dead & the gone. I look out my window and see snow on the ground and I think, Why can't it be June already!

Of course when d&g comes out, the reviews could be awful, and then I'll wish time had never passed and I'd been allowed to stay in the happy cocoon of expectations.

Oh, the heck with the cocoon. If nothing else, my gas/electric bills will be lower in June. There's always something to look forward to.

I've done no work on Wikipedia. Off I go, to research my life and times.

I have had a bunch of people request to borrow my ARC of d&g. I think it made it through me + 3 coworkers before getting mailed out (this morning) to someone who read the review on my blog... Just thought you'd like to know how many people you've made happy with that one ARC! Thanks again!

My much loved D&G has gone to a neighbor's 26 year old son who thinks it's great. She has five other sons and all want to read it. (I hope I can get it back in one piece!)

By the way, does 'Librarina' rhyme with 'Thumbelina'?

I suppose Librarina does rhyme with Thumbelina, Glen... It started out as a typo, but I really liked it and decided to start my blog with that name. Unfortunately, though, I am not as graceful as "Librarina" may insinuate! (teeheehee)

Actually, 'Librarina' sounds like you should be competing on 'So You Want to Be A Superhero', which isn't exactly a bad thing.

Some Library Directors came into where I work today and, though there gait might not be ballet-like, their gift of chocolate made them seem like gazelles.
