It's All Labor Day Weekend's Fault

And yet I wish you all a happy Labor Day Weekend.

My mother is doing great, but she's stuck at the health center a while longer because of Labor Day Weekend.

Before they'll spring her, she has to do what's called a home visit. Basically that means she visits her home, while we all watch her (I'll be joining the crowd). Because of the holiday, the home visit can't be scheduled until Wednesday morning.

Then, after my mother breezes through the home visit, there have to be some more meetings to discuss what will happen with her once she leaves the health center. And that will add a few more days to her stay there.

So even though as far as my mother and I are concerned, she could go home today, she'll be stuck at the health center most likely for another 10 days or so.

Curse you American Labor Movement! Okay, I don't really mean that (sorry, Samuel Gompers), but I do wish Labor Day were either earlier this year or much much later.

Thank you jmaster1324-

That is actually a comforting thought.

I spoke to my mother this morning and she said they were going to see if she could dress herself.

So it definitely looks like we're all going in the right direction!

I've been through something like you're going through twice in the last two years and it's not fun for anyone. However, as long as she's in a place that she's being treated well, that should at least give you the relief that she's not home alone. Do they at least have some social stuff going on there? Everyone loves Bingo.

Hi Glen-

My mother is gleefully anti-social; she likes to read and watch a bit of TV and nap.

Now that I think about it, that sounds a lot like me.

It is stress reducing for me to know she's in safe hands. I've been trying to call her this afternoon, to tell her to turn on the TV to watch tennis, but she isn't answering, and I'm not panicking.

Although I do wish she'd answer the phone already...

Glad to know you're mother's doing well. Love your blog, you couldn't believe how excited I was when I stumbled upon it!<3

that sounds like me,really. Without the napping part. But if she is ok,it doesn't matter if she's anti-social.

Maybe you could plan a welcome back party for her.

Happy Sunday morning Hailee and Jill-

I visited my mother yesterday (well, it was her 98th birthday, so I really had to). I brought her flowers and some pastry.

Marci had already visited, complete with a fancy box of chocolates.

My mother looks great and is eager for the home visit on Wednesday. I'm eager for her to get back home. I think she's getting too spoiled in the health center!

Hi! I just finished reading Life as We Knew It, and thought you might be interested in hearing how I came across it . . .

I was at Fan Expo a week ago, and at one of the panels, Max Brooks was asked to recommend one horror book he thought everyone should read; he named Life as we Knew It. He said that with most post-apocalyptic-type books he read, he usually got annoyed when he saw points where he'd do something differently than the characters, but with LaWKNI, they were a step ahead of him.

With a recommendation of that caliber, how could I resist?

Looking forward to reading the next two!

Happy Labor Day Kelsi Parker and welcome to the blog-

Thank you for your comment and for telling me about Max Brooks' words of praise for LAWKI.

There have been so many unexpected moments of pleasure with LAWKI, and one has been the intersection of horror/zombie fans with the book. That whole genre is so beyond my capacities to write that it gives me particular pleasure when I hear its fans like my book.

So thank you again for bringing that story over here. It's put quite a smile on my face!

That Max Brooks recommendation is a mighty fine thing. I mean, he's won an Emmy for writing Saturday Night Live. Yes. This is very, very good.

Congratulations!
