Decisions, Decisions

I woke up at 5:30 this morning and instead of concentrating on important things like should I take brown shoes and black shoes to Germany or two pairs of black shoes, I started thinking about stories for the possible Shade Of The Moon Story Version.

I'm not opposed to thinking about stories, since I'm hoping to write one today. That, laundry, and the neverending exploration of my closet for travel clothes are the only jobs I have scheduled.

But the story idea that popped into my mind even before Scooter popped onto my bed was very La Ronde, moderately Lulu, and all kinds of bleak and dark. Naturally I loved it, but sadly it involves the death of Alex.

Since not a single word has been written, I'm not committed to anything (truly not committed; the contract remains unsigned in the file cabinet, where it's being buried by other unfiled papers). And the previous ending I'd worked out for the possible potential maybe I'll write it maybe they'll like it volume of stories has Alex alive and at relative peace by book's end.

But I do love this bleak dark story, which also ends with Alex at peace. And both versions of the book's ending (for those who worry) have Miranda going on with her life (she has nothing to do with Alex's death, should he die)

Anyway, I figured I'd put up a poll. It's only going to be until Sunday, since I don't know how much checking up on things I'm going to do next week. And it's just to give me a sense of how willing you are to have Alex die at the end. I'm going to divvy the poll into 4 possible answers, yes and no, and under 18 and 18 and over.

Feel free to leave comments. Again, this is just to get a sense of whether this story idea is worth working on, or whether, like several other ideas, it should die aborning.

And no matter what you respond, thank you!

I think that Miranda and Alex should get married!!! I really think he shouldn't die. They are a perfect couple and deserve to live happily ever after!!!

I think as much as I hate it, u should have Alex somehow injured severely and him almost not making it but like not make the ending until the end of the book to have readers wanting to read the whole book

i want you to write a fourth book, but i am only ok with Alex dying b/c you already killed off Bri and i liked her much better than Alex anyway. I never liked him much.

Please don't make Alex die. I love the series and it just got 10x better with romance between Miranda and Alex. They should get married by a priest. If someone must die, and you want It to be dramatic, maybe you can make it Gabriel or the mom, or maybe even Lisa

Hello Anonymous and Anonymous and Asian Swag and Anonymous and Abigail and Emily, and thank you all for your comments.

It's been very interesting to read the comments and to see the poll results.

Alex is much on my mind these days. It's good to have feedback about the different possibilities.

His fate is in our hands!

I also agree that the book got much better and more interesting when the romance started. He should not die.

i'm eighteen and i think it really depends on the rest of the story. i voted for "alex can die" but i don't necessarily want him to, if that makes sense. it could work either way, depending on the rest of the book, and so i think it's really up to you--we can't decide because we don't know anything else about what's happened before. but i'm sure you'll make the right decision and do either ending justice. (:

Hello and thank you to Anonymous, Youryoungestbiggestfan! and Anonymous-

I've really enjoyed reading your comments and watching the poll results.

There seems to be a preference for keeping Alex alive. Most likely that's a good idea!

I think Alex and Miranda should get married!!!!! their love makes the book 100x better, so you should keep Alex ALIVE! and you should TOTALLY write the fourth book, I would be soooooo happy, and so would a LOT of peope.

I still think Miranda should start up her diaries again and it shouldn't be short stories. But only because the other 3 books are really really good. I hope Alex lives but maybe he can be injured to make the story more suspenseful.

I agree with Anonymous, I would prefer the book not to be short story since I enjoyed Miranda and her family. Also, I would like to hear it from Miranda.
The other books are amazing! Thanks for writing such wonderful novels. I'm under 18 and I do think Alex should live but something should happen to him...maybe. I wanted to mention that when it was my turn to choose a book for my book club I chose Life As We Knew it. I have already read all 3 books and I'm looking forward to the fourth. Thanks again!

So as much as i love alex and miranda together, one needs to die.....these books arent happy and they are so creepy and good, it is almost a dissapointment when it ends all happy....I think it is essential to have someone die in this fourth book. I am a huge fan by the way and love all three books and am sooooooo for this fourth book and cant wait to read it! Thanks

I would understand if Alex were to die. Not that I want it, but I know how necessary those things can be to plot and how a story clicks. The ending should be in your hands.

Thank you Anonymous and 0123 and Tyler and J.F. Kirk (Tari)-

Everyone has given me a lot to think about, and I am very appreciative.

Now if I can only find where I left my brain, I could start to do something thinking!

In my personal opinion, as someone who both loves character death and considers Alex one of the best YA characters ever created, I think you should kill Miranda and let Alex live. That might very well challenge Alex's religious beliefs and it could give him some interesting things to do. He's had so much loss, so much pain, it would be interesting to see him finally have to question his belief in a loving God. He could then either come back to religion or leave it forever.

Alternatively, since Alex really has had a bad go of it, he could settle down and live out his life happily with Miranda but I suspect that that might not fit your overall theme.

I definitely think that you could take Alex in more directions than you could with Miranda. No diss on Miranda, but Alex has had a far worse life.

On a quick side note, I just finished Blood Wounds and it might actually be, as crazy as it sounds, better than the moon books. I adored it.

Thank you so much for sharing your work with the world.

i think Alex should die. It provides a major conflict to the major character, almost as major as the moon coming closer thing. Plus, in my opinion, I think Miranda needs to actually face death of someone she loves and can't help. Yes, mrs. Nesbitt died, yes Charlie died, but she needs someone that she loves loves to die.
just my two cents

Hello and thank you rock4ever95 and Anonymous-

My guess is both Miranda and Alex are going to live. It would break my heart to kill off Miranda (we've been through so much together), and Alex has earned a moderately happy ending.

So have I!

No matter what I don't want Alex to die- under 18 by the way- and I love your books! If a 4th book did come out I'd cry of happiness. Thanks for writing such great books.
